Nylon and Polyester: Knowing my swimwear fabric
When choosing a swimwear, it is likely that most of us would just
want to feel how comfortable is the swimwear and how we look in it,
we do not usually look at the materials used to produce the
swimwear.
However, bits of information about the fabric will tell you how the
swimwear would "behave" the moment you start enjoying it, and also
help you in knowing how to maintain your swimwear quality.
Both Nylon (also known as Polyamide) and Polyester are superb
fabric choices for swimwear as both are "tough" materials which can
withstand the heavy use of constant body movements. Both materials
are resistant to shrinkage, which of course is a must for an
apparel we use in water most, if not all the time.
Nylon and Polyester are synthetic fabrics, meaning they are
manufactured.
Here are some other features about the fabrics. It might help you
decide which swimwear to buy.
Moisture Absorbency: Both Nylon and Polyester have low moisture
absorbency, so you won't feel the swimwear weighing on you after
your dip. However Nylon has much less (some articles say zero)
absorbency than Polyester. It also means that a Nylon-made swimwear
dries quicker than a Polyester-made one.
Comfort Stretch: Nylon has a better stretch than Polyester, so it
gives a "less tightness" feel on the body, and the swimwear is
easier to put on (than a Polyester made one). However, more stretch
may also mean that the swimwear will lose its shape quicker than
the one with less stretch.
Chlorine Resistance: Polyester has better resistance to chlorine
than Nylon. Your swimwear will have less fade in its colours over
time if it is more chlorine resistant.
Sun Exposure Resistance: Polyester has better sun exposure
resistance than Nylon. With this property, you worry less about
your swimwear thinning out with use.
